A special court in Bangladesh sentenced to death 16 people for a grisly double murder in 2000 in which the victims' bodies were hacked to pieces.
Judge Shahed Nooruddin of the Speedy Trial Court in Dhaka sentenced the 16 to the gallows and handed down life terms to two others for the murders of two men after they failed to pay a 50,000 Taka (approximately 900 dollars) extortion fee.
Those sentenced to death for murdering Sayem and Mohsin in 2000 were ringleader Rahid Hasan Shumon, Sajid Hassan alias Sujan, Mohammad Sharif, Mohammad Nadeem, Ramzan, Chhoto Ramzan, Baro Ripon, Muktar, Bashirul Islam alias Bidyut, Nazrul, Shangkar Rakhit, Mintu, Titu, Aziz, Anwar alias Anu and Jahangir.
