A speedy trial court in Barisal, Bangladesh, condemned to death Mamun Peyada and sentenced 16 others to life imprisonment for murder. According to the prosecution, the convicts took victim Abul Kalam to the district council office from a tea stall in front of Patuakhali College on August 23, 1999. They hacked him severely and cut off one of his legs. He was first admitted to Patuakhali Hospital and later taken to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital where he died on August 28. Riot police were deployed on the court premises to ward off any untoward incidents during the announcement of the verdict.
