Shipon Hawlader and Naimul Islam alias Imon were sentenced to death while Muhammad Maruf Sikder, Muhammad Solaiman, Ripon Hawlader, Mazharul Islam Farhad and Helal Uddin Helal were given life terms imprisonemnt. Of the five -- Ripon, Mazharul and Helal -- were absconding and tried in absentia. The Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal also fined the five lifers Tk 50,000 each, in default, to suffer another two years in jail.
According to the prosecution, the accused raided the Ambagan Railway Colony residence of Shafiuddin alias Muhammad Shafi, vice president of Railway Muktijoddha Dal, in Kulshi thana and shot him to death on June 14, 2003.
