A Speedy Trial Tribunal in Dhaka, Bangladesh, convicted five people, sentencing one of them to death and four others to life term imprisonment for the murder of Shajahan Hawlader Sujon.
Of the convicts, Kajal Ahmed Jalali was condemned to death while Dr Rowshan Alam, Humayun Kabir, Ibrahim Noor alias Apu and Ziauddin were sentenced to life imprisonemtn.
Three of them, Kajal Ahmed Jalali, Ibrahim Noor and Ziauddin, were tried in absentia.
According to the prosecution, Shajahan Hawlader, 35, elected MP from Brahmanbaria twice for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was kidnapped from his Shantinagar residence in Dhaka on July 3, 2001 and his body was recovered from Suhrawardi Udyan the following day.
Dr. Rowshan Alam, who contested the election from the same constituency in 1996 and failed to come out successful in the election, had Shajahan killed out of political rivalry.
