The Speedy Trial Act created with the purpose of curbing violent crimes would remain in force in Bangladesh for another two years following its expiry on April 9, 2004. To extend the term of the much-talked-about law Parliament passed the Disruption of Law and Order Offences (Speedy Trial) Act 2004. Home Minister Air Vice Marshal (retired) Altaf Hossain Chowdhury piloted the bill seeking amendment to the Disruption of Law and Order Offences (Speedy Trial) Act 2002, which had been effective since April 10 of that year. Arguing for extension of the life of the law, he told the House that the country's law-and-order situation had improved following the re-classification of crimes such as terrorist acts, extortion and kidnapping under the speedy trial law.
