A spokesman for the London-based Islamic Observation Centre [IOC] said that Jordanian security forces arrested and detained eight Libyan Islamists living in Jordan and that they intend to deport them to Libya. The spokesman stressed that "they escaped with their religion from the Libyan regime's repression and injustice several years ago and sought shelter in Jordan so as to live in peace and away from injustice." The IOC spokesman appealed to Jordan's King Abdullah II, human rights organisations, and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to intervene, stating "They have not committed any crime other than performing their religious rites diligently, which could be a cause for their execution if they are deported to Libya." Informed sources in Amman confirmed the arrests but said the talk about extraditing them to Libya was "inaccurate and premature."
