A Supreme Court ruling came into force which provides the death penalty for civil servants convicted of major tax fraud. The official China News Service reported that the Supreme People's Court instructed judges across the country to use the death penalty when sentencing those found guilty of tax fraud involving government losses of more than 2.5 million yuan (HK$2.35 million). The move came following the court's reinterpretation of what constituted an "extraordinary" crime under criminal law.
