A survey showed that the public believed crime had risen since 1994, while justice system had deteriorated. In total, 470 people older than 17 were interviewed. The respondents were asked how they thought the criminal justice system was performing, whether judges were passing the correct sentences, and how they felt about vigilantism. A substantial majority thought sentences were too lenient and that this had played a major role in the increase in crime since 1994. Three quarters of respondents were in favour of a reintroduction of the death penalty for serious crimes.
