A total of 33 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are facing the prospect of being sentenced to death in six countries, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.
Saudi Arabia leads the list with 24 Filipinos facing possible execution, 15 in Riyadh and nine in Jeddah. Next are Libya and the United Arab Emirates with three each, while Bahrain, China and the US all have one OFW each facing the death penalty.
However, DFA executive director for migrant workers affairs Rowena Sanchez said there is no cause for alarm yet since the cases are still pending.
In the US, there are at least 202 OFWs in jail. One of them was meted the death penalty.
In Abu Dhabi, there are 94 Filipinos in jail and three of them face capital punishment. Foreign Affairs Department records showed there are three Filipinos jailed in Libya who were meted the death penalty. There is one Filipino jailed and facing capital punishment in each of the following countries: Bahrain, China and the US.
