A Turkish court sentenced 33 Moslem activists to death for their role in an Islamist riot in 1993 in which 37 people were killed. The Ankara state security court had handed down the same penalty before but its verdict was overruled by a higher court. In the previous ruling, the Islamists were found guilty of a role in an arson attack during the riot in the central town of Sivas. But Turkey's appeal court ordered a new trial saying that many of the other sentences of up to 15 years were too light. Thirty-seven people, mostly members of the liberal Moslem minority Alevis, died in the attack.
