A woman's pressure group, comprising mainly Muslim women, was pushing the government to get tough with sex criminals. Citing a survey among 5,300 women, the People's Rights group said there was unanimous support for the execution of rapists. 89% of respondents wanted them jailed for life and 3% favoured castration by scalpel or by chemical. Some of the women wanted the rapists consigned to a dark room for life, or drowned or decapitated and the head impaled as a warning to others. Chanpen Prapaithong, secretary of the group, said that penalties of this sort would eradicate rape.
