According to a report released by the standing committee on human rights the six inmates found dead at Kig'ong'o Prison in September 2000 were murdered by prison guards. The report said the prisoners were killed to cover up a plot by the guards to facilitate the escape of a fellow inmate Goeffrey Ipomai.
The committee chaired by Prof Onesmus Mutungi recommended that those responsible be punished for their actions and the families of the prisoners be compensated fully. It revealed that the six were lured out of their cells, ordered to strip naked and hacked to death by prison warders using axes and machetes.
To support the conclusion the committee released gory photographs of the inmates who lay in a pool of blood with deep cuts on their upper limbs. Professor Mutungi ruled out claims by prisons authorities that the prisoners were killed by warders in an attempt to foil their escape.
The report further dismisses allegations that prisoners died of injuries sustained when they tried to escape by jumping of the 24-foot perimeter wall. The six inmates were Joseph Kamande, Peter Koring, Peter Gurachana, John Nyoro, Julius Mungania and Peter Loiyara. They were all on death row.
