According to a survey, most Uzbeks believe that terrorists should be given the death penalty. A total of 57 per cent of those polled by the Ijtimoiy Fikr public opinion study centre said that the punishment for terrorism should be death, and 20 per cent of them said it should be life imprisonment. Those polled were asked to answer the following question: "In your opinion, what kind of punishment should the law envisage for those citizens of the country who with weapons in their hands belong to organized extremist and terrorist bandit formations and want to overthrow the government and change existing social and political system?" The survey was conducted in Tashkent and involved "representatives of all sections of the population - residents of towns and villages, women and men, people of different ages and ethnic origin".
