Ahmad Shlash Hassan and Ezzo Hussein al-Hussein, both Syrian nationals, were sentenced to death and two others to life in prison for a car bomb attack and gun battle that killed four people in Damascus.
One defendant confessed on state television in May 2004, saying he was motivated by what he called US and Israeli aggression against Muslims. He denied he was part of a political group and said the attack was aimed at foreign interests. Security forces exchanged fire with four gunmen after a car bomb blast outside a former UN building in Damascus on April 27. A policeman and a woman were killed, as well as two of the four assailants. Two men arrested later and accused of involvement in the attack -- Azzam al-Nahar and Abdul-Basset Hasida -- received life sentences.
