Judicial officials confirmed that Syria handed over Ra'id Hijazi to Jordan. Ra'id Hijazi had been convicted in absentia by the State Security Court of plotting attacks on Western targets across the kingdom.
Hijazi, a Jordanian of Palestinian origin, was one of eight Muslim extremists sentenced to death by hanging by the State Security Court on September 18, 2000. Hijazi was one of two sentenced in absentia. Jordan and Syria are principal signatories to the strictly-adhered to Arab security-related accord, reached by Arab ministers of interior in Riyadh in the 1980s.
