Aid workers who have fled Afghanistan fear their imprisoned colleagues Peter Bunch and Diana Thomas could be used as pawns in any military stand-off between Afghanistan and the United States.
Perth couple Philip and Julie Sparrow, who work for the Christian development organisation Tear Australia, were given just 72 hours to evacuate the Afghani border town of Peshawar.
"Now that all the aid agencies and the ambassadors have left, who will advocate for them?" asked Mrs Sparrow, who lived in Afghanistan with her husband and eight-month-old daughter Pieta.
The Sparrows met Mr Bunch and Ms Thomas in Kabul when they were managing a program for Tear Australia.
Mr Sparrow said the world should not forget the 16 Afghanis in jail who would "almost certainly be given the death penalty for simply working for SNI (Shelter Now International)".
The Sparrows believe that with all foreign aid workers gone, Afghanistan is a humanitarian disaster in the making.
