Alabama may become the third US state to impose the death penalty for those convicted of raping children.
Montana and Louisiana have passed laws which would allow execution for a second conviction of child rape. Alabama's House of Representatives is due to vote on a similar sentencing policy if the child was under 12.
Any such sentence would almost certainly be challenged all the way to the Supreme Court. But the states' decisions reflect a growing clamour for tough punishment of paedophiles.
The moves came as a 28-state survey revealed that since January at least 177 Catholic priests suspected of molesting children have resigned or been removed from their posts.
