Albania's National Assembly ratified Protocol 6 of the European Convention of Human Rights which sees the end of capital punishment in the country. Albania was duty-bound to ratify the protocol due to its adherence to the European Convention, the move comes as a follow up to the Albanian Constitutional Court's decision on December 10, 1999 to abolish the death penalty.
