Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said that "The government's initiative is not a must to abolish death penalty. It can be abolished through some changes in law." Ecevit said that the Democratic Left Party (DSP) had always been against the death penalty and he added that all political parties except for the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) had agreed to terminate capital punishment.
