Alleged beatings and worsening conditions have claimed the lives of at least 56 inmates in Meru prison in eastern Kenya since January, the Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU), a non-governmental watchdog, said.
"Worse prison conditions and beatings are largely to blame for the deaths of at least 56 people in Meru prison since the beginning of the year," Kakai Kissinger, head of the group said.
"The government should take steps to end this inhumanity in our correctional facilities, because we have unimpeachable evidence that there are human rights violations there," Kissinger added.
In late September, 14 prisoners were allegedly beaten and left for dead in the same prison, after they reportedly refused to take orders to enter into a congested cell.
State-run Kenya National Commission on Human Rights said the facility, built to house about 500 prisoners, housed about 1,400 inmates.
