Amendments to the Criminal Code, the Criminal Code of Practice and the Administrative Code entered into force in Uzbekistan.
The majority of articles in the Criminal Code are supplemented with alternative punishments, which will enable the court to choose other ways of punishment than custody.
The amendments also narrow the use of the death penalty. The number of crimes liable for the death penalty has been reduced from eight to four. From now on, Uzbekistan will apply the death penalty only for aggression, genocide, terrorism and first-degree murder.
The country had legalized the exemption of women and minors from the death penalty. This is now valid for men over 60 years of age, as well.
