The leader of an underground Islamic group in Uzbekistan was sentenced to death for conspiring to hijack an aircraft to Afghanistan.
A court in Uzbekistan's north-western Khorezm region convicted Akhmed Tumanov to death. Nineteen followers received from four to 21 years in prison.
The group, which was arrested in June, intended to join the army of the ruling Taliban in Afghanistan, the Justice Ministry said. The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan is fighting to overthrow the regime of the Uzbekistan president, Islam Karimov.
