amendments were introduced to the Tajik Criminal Code envisaging life imprisonment as an alternative measure to the death penalty. A moratorium on death penalty had been introduced in Tajikistan in April 2004. The amendments were introduced during a meeting of the sixth session of the Tajik Assembly of Representatives. 
The presidential permanent representative in the parliament, Shermuhammad Shoyev, had submitted the relevant draft law to deputies for consideration. He said that the introduction of amendments to the Criminal Code were necessary because even if there was criminal punishment of 25 years in prison in lieu of the death penalty, there were still crimes that did not conform to this measure of punishment.
The chairman of the parliament's committee for constitutional law, legislation and human rights, Abdumannon Kholiqov, told journalists that life imprisonment would be implemented only under five articles of the Tajik Criminal Code - aggravated murder, aggravated assault, terrorism, biocide and genocide.
