Amnesty International-Tanzania advised the government to repeal the death penalty enshrined in the constitution. Launching the report on human rights in Dar es Salaam, the chairman of the Amnesty International-Tanzania, Israel Magesa, said the international organization still stuck to its stand that the death penalty was against fundamental human rights. "The Amnesty International for another occasion is insisting its request to the government of Tanzania to consider repealing the death penalty, because it is inhuman and to a large extent has not led to reduction of deaths caused by people," Magesa said. He said the 2002 decision of President Benjamin Mkapa to pardon 100 people sentenced to death by commuting the penalties to life imprisonment was a sign that the law was redundant.
