An angry crowd called for the reinstatement of the death penalty during the court appearance of an Eastern Cape child rapist Vusumzi Stena. He was sentenced to two life sentences for raping and killing an 11-year-old girl last year.
The African National Congress welcomed the life sentences given to Stena and Elias Ramohapi Ntholeng, also found guilty of raping girls.
"The ANC welcomes these sentences as an indication that the courts of our country have the capacity to mete out justice in a manner that will ensure that criminals think twice about committing acts of this nature," it said in a statement.
