South African Deputy President Jacob Zuma called for stiffer sentences for those found guilty of rape and murder in response to a spate of child rapes in which three babies were the latest victims.
Criticizing people advocating the reinstatement of the death penalty, Zuma said anyone calling for criminals to be hanged was ignorant of the history of the country, adding that since the Constitution did not allow for criminals to be hanged, heavier sentences were needed as compensation.
"I personally will prefer that all rapists and murderers get a life sentence," he said.
