An Indonesian court sentenced to death an accomplice of a Malaysian bomber over an explosion at a Jakarta shopping mall in August 2001 that was linked by the judge to an international terrorist network.
The Central Jakarta court decided that Indonesian national Edi Setiono possessed the bomb that exploded injuring several people, but Setiono criticised the verdict and his lawyers said he would appeal.
The death penalty, carried out by firing squad, is rarely enforced in Indonesia.
"The defendant's actions were systematic and evidence has led us to an international terrorist network. He has used the issue of religion to create trouble," said presiding judge Sirande Palayukan.
On his way out of the courtroom, Setiono said: "I'm not guilty. I was not even there and the court can't prove (my involvement)."
On May 7 the same court also handed the death penalty to Malaysian Taufik bin Abdullah Halim, who lost a leg when the device exploded while he was carrying it.
Prosecutors said Abdullah Halim and some Indonesian accomplices were plotting to attack Christians about to board a bus near Jakarta's bustling Atrium Mall.
The judge gave no details on what terrorist network he had in mind in his comments, but prosecutors had said Abdullah Halim was a member of the Kumpulan Militan Malaysia (KMM), which Malaysian police say aimed to use violence to carve out an Islamic state across the Malay archipelago.
