an official of the Popular National Assembly sent laws regarding the abolition of the death penalty proposed by Ali Brahimi of the Parliamentary group RCD (Rassemblement pour la Culture et la Démocratie) to the government. The document is composed of 10 articles. The first totally and simply abolishes the death penalty, while the second proposes that it is substituted by life imprisonment. The project has the support of four other parties besides the RCD group. The project risks opposition by Hamas parliamentarians, who are against the abolition of the death penalty “in conformance with Shariah law” according to their statements. The text of the designed laws was deposited on December 6, 2008.
