Armenia should exercise maximum caution in its approach to the issue of abolishing the death penalty, the Deputy Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly Tigran Torosyan told reporters at the National Press Club.
He recalled that abolishing the death penalty was not included in the package of obligations of the republic to the Council of Europe as Armenia did not sign Protocol No 6 of the European Convention of Fundamental Human Rights and Freedoms.
The Deputy Speaker said that the Armenian National Assembly is currently considering a draft law on a special part of the Criminal Code which envisages commutation of the death sentence to life imprisonment.
As a result, Tigran Torosyan pledged, an optimum option would be found under which the terrorist act of 27 October 1999 in the Armenian parliament would be considered as a separate case.
