As concern for the 75 civil liberties activists arrested in Cuba a year ago and currently jailed under harsh detention conditions rises, the Tuscan Regional Government, Hands Off Cain and the Italian Helsinki Committee are promoting an exhibition to draw attention to their plight.
The collection of images by controversial photographer Oliviero Toscani is entitled "Thought is forbidden: the face of repression in Cuba". It opened on Sunday 4th July in Florence, at the Palazzo Panciatichi, in Via Cavour 4, the city headquarters of the Regional Government. The inauguration, hosted by the President of the Regional Council Riccardo Nencini, featured the author, Oliviero Toscani and HOC General Secretary Sergio D'Elia.
The 75 dissidents - many of whom supporters of the 'Varela project' that aims to gather signatures for a referendum to propose the introduction of a multi-party system in Cuba - were arrested by Castro's regime on March 18, 2003. A few days later they were given jail terms ranging from 6 to 28 years in jail on charges such as treason or political conspiracy under the Law for the Protection of National Independence and the Economy of Cuba, a gag law better known as Law No. 88.
Ailing economist Martha Beatriz Roque, trade unionist Pedro Pablo Alvarez and journalist Ricardo Conzalez were among those jailed.
