As of early November, around 42 people had been given the death penalty for drug trafficking since the beginning of the year, according to statistics reported by the local press. Sixty people in all were sentenced to death last year for smuggling illegal substances into the country. To date, 14 foreigners have been sentenced to death for drug-related offenses in Vietnam and 6 of them - a Singaporean, 2 Laotians and 3 Hong Kong nationals - have been executed.
