At least six people have been arrested following what authorities in Malawi said was an uncovered coup plot against the government of President Bakili Muluzi.Milward Chikwamba, the southern region police commissioner handling the case, disclosed that the six had been charged with treason, a capital offence that carries the death penalty.Chikwamba named the coup leader as Sudi Adaki Sulaimana but refused to release the identities of his accomplices. Sources close to the investigations, however, say the five other coup plotters are soldiers whom Sulaimana was using to achieve his goals.President Muluzi is opposed to capital punishment and has yet to sign execution orders for any prisoners on death row.
