Robert Lee Massie, a convicted killer who spent two separate stints on death row and gained notoriety while pursuing his own demise for more than 30 years, was executed by the State of California early this morning. Massie, was pronounced dead at 12:33 a.m. at San Quentin State Prison. Massie, who has spent much of his life behind bars, was 1st sentenced to death for a 1965 murder in Southern California. But the sentence was commuted when the state's death penalty was struck down, and he was paroled in 1978. 9 months later, he went to Naumoff's liquor store with a gun. He withdrew his federal court appeal in January and said in a court that he preferred execution to "lingering death by life imprisonment".
