Attorney General Drew Edmondson urged the state Court of Criminal Appeals to postpone scheduling executions in Oklahoma until the U.S. Supreme Court settles the issue of what is cruel and unusual punishment. The case is expected to be argued early next year with a decision seen likely by the end of June.
Oklahoma has 80 inmates on death row, but no executions now are scheduled. The state's 1st execution by lethal injection was in 1990, Massie said. So far, 86 executions by lethal injection have been carried out in Oklahoma.
