Attorney-General Glenda Morean Phillips said Trinidad and Tobago was drafting new legislation to allow for the execution of convicted killers. "We may or may not succeed because of the fact [that] even if you have legislation, that legislation would be subject to challenge. But as a government we have to do something and we're doing it," Morean said on a television show in the country. Morean told her television audience that there were many obstacles in the way of the government making it "very difficult to carry out the death penalty". "The death penalty is on our statute books. We have to do what is necessary to implement it. Before all this debate arose, I had already begun to put things in motion towards ensuring that we have the necessary legislative will to implement the death penalty. By that I mean we would have to put whatever legislation is necessary to ensure that we carry out the law that is on the statute books," she added.
