A federal judge has thrown out the death sentence for Keith B

A federal judge has thrown out the death sentence for Keith B. Canaan, setting the stage for a new death-penalty hearing for the 44-year-old convicted in the Dec. 29, 1985 brutal slaying of Lori Ann Bullock.
The ruling by U.S. District Judge David F. Hamilton, which lets stand Canaan's conviction, reversed Canaan's conviction for attempted criminal deviate conduct - an aggravating charge that was required for a death sentence.
In his ruling, the federal judge also ruled Canaan was not adequately advised during the penalty phase of his trial of his right to testify in his own behalf.
