BANGLADESH: FIVE SENTENCED TO DEATH OVER WAR CRIMES IN NETROKONA

A court in Netrokona has sentenced to death five fugitives on charges of torture, abduction, murder and rape during the Liberation War in 1971 in Purbodhala.
A three-member International Crimes Tribunal led by Justice Shahinur Islam announced the verdict on 28 March 2019.
The convicts at large are Sheikh Md Abdul Majid aka Majid Maulana, 66, Md Abdul Khalek Talukdar, 67, Md Kabir Khan, 70, Abdus Salam Beg, 68 and Nuruddin, 70.
They had joined the Nizam-e-Islami and Muslim League which collaborated against the Liberation War and conducted different crimes against humanity, the court heard.
The prosecution have proved all seven charges brought against the convicts, the court said in its verdict.
"All of the accused are at large because they have committed the crime. They would have faced the trial if they were innocent."
The convicts will have an opportunity to appeal the verdict at the Supreme Court within a month if they surrender.
