BANGLADESH FOUR SENTENCED TO DEATH IN PROFESSOR TAHER MURDER CASE

four people in Bangladesh were sentenced to death for the murder of Professor Sheikh Taher Ahmed. The convicts are Rajshahi University teacher Dr Mia Mohammad Mohiuddin, Jahangir, the caretaker of the quarter of Professor Dr Taher, Jahangir’s brother Salam and relative Nazmul. In his verdict, Judge ATM Mezbah Doula of the Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal acquitted former president of the RU unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir Mahbubul Alam Salehi and Azimuddin Munshi, father of Jahangir. According to the prosecution, Dr Taher, a senior professor of Geology and Mining Department, was kidnapped and killed on February 1, 2006. His body was dumped into the septic tank behind his RU-campus residence.
According to the charge, Mohiuddin “masterminded” the murder in apprehension of damage to his career by Prof Taher, who detected 'plagiarism and piracy' Mohiuddin’s research papers. “Mohiuddin then hired Salehi to murder Taher and promised him good grades and an job at the university,” it was alleged. “Mohiuddin also persuaded Salam, Nazmul and Jahangir with personal computers and jobs at the university,” the charge sheet continued.
