a peasant aged about 45 was sentenced to death for strangling his second wife at Gopinathpur in sadar upazila, Bangladesh, two years ago. Special tribunal judge Mofizul Islam handed down the death penalty to Asalat for the murder of Mariam on February 14, 2006. The prosecution said Asalt married Mariam on the assurance of Tk one lakh as dowry from her parents. After marriage he insisted she get the dowry, which she failed to do. Mariam’s mother accused Asalat and his first wife of strangling her daughter. The prosecution held that after the murder, Mariam was left hanging from the branch of a mango tree in front of the house to make people believe she committed suicide.
