BOTSWANA. CLERIC PLANS MASSIVE CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY

the vice president of the Botswana Christian Council (BCC), Reverend Kebinang Moenga, said he intended to launch a massive war against the government on the issue of capital punishment. He said the punishment was a social evil that needed to be done away with immediately. 
"I think for a long time, Botswana has been quiet about capital punishment, but it is about time we move forward to campaign for more support. We in Botswana tend to be blind when we look at evil deeds like death sentences," Moeng said.
Moenga said evils like capital punishment always happened but that many people turned a blind eye to such issues. He added that when people looked at a sin, they ignored the role society played in creating that sin. He added that when the government hanged criminals, it was assuming the role of God and suggested that those found guilty should instead be rehabilitated so that the society could try to correct its ills.
"Capital punishment has been practised for a long time here in Botswana and of course many people are supporting it. This is because many in Botswana Batswana need to be educated on this matter," Moenga said. To show his commitment in the fight against capital punishment, he had written a book entitled 'Evils of capital punishment, an ethical perspective'. The 67-page book gave some biblical examples to show that God shunned the death penalty. The book cited the story of Cain who murdered his brother Abel. God did not sentence Cain to death but instead loved him even though he was a criminal.
