Botswana President Festus Mogae reacted to the controversy sparked off by the execution of Marietta Sonjaleen Bosch by asserting that he was a "retributionist by conviction" who shall always uphold the laws of his country. The President said that Bosch had exhausted the legal process and had been proved guilty beyond reasonable doubt. Therefore there was no alternative but to make sure that she was executed according to the laws of Botswana, he said. The Botswana centre for human rights, Ditshwanelo, strongly condemned the execution of Bosch and vowed to continue with the fight for the abolition of the death penalty in the southern African country.
