British journalist Yvonne Ridley, who was arrested by the Taleban after illegally entering the country on September 28, was released.
The 43-year-old Sunday Express reporter was escorted from Kabul by Taleban officials and handed over to Pakistani authorities, at the Torkham border crossing at the foot of the Khyber Pass.
Ridley had been faced the possibility of standing trial under the Taleban's strict interpretation of Islamic law for illegally entering the country. The Taleban were also investigating the possibility that she had been a spy with the special forces - a crime that carries the death penalty.
The fate of the two men arrested with her is not known but they could face severe punishment. One Afghan journalist told The Scotsman: "The two guides will still be regarded as having committed a serious crime and may be imprisoned for 15 years."
