Canadian Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy welcomed Vietnam's decision to release Nguyen's mother Tran Thi Cam, 74, executed in April. Vietnam released Tran Thi Cam from prison, along with three other Canadian citizens, as part of a general amnesty. Tran was arrested with her daughter in April 1996 and sentenced to life imprisonment. Lloyd Axworthy said: "The way has been cleared for discussions toward restoration of co-operation between our two countries in a variety of areas."
