In Istanbul, a mothers' group released doves and called for a negotiated solution to the 16-year-long war between Turkish security forces and the separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in southeastern Turkey. The protests occurred one year after captured PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, sentenced to death for treason, ordered his rebels to withdraw from Turkey and pursue a political solution to the conflict that has claimed more than 30,000 lives.
