Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt after a meeting of Belgian Council of Ministers said Belgium will not extradite Fehriye Erdal to Turkey. Belgium, however, opposed her request for political asylum and was negotiating a solution with her lawyers, including the possibility of finding her permanent residence in a third country. Verhofstadt said that Erdal would face trial in Belgium. "She has a residence here and must be judged before a Belgian court," Verhofstadt said. In addition to weapons violations, Erdal faced charges in Belgium of using a false name, hiding stolen goods and associating with criminals.
