Cedric Maake, a serial killer convicted of 27 murders, 14 rapes and robbery was sentenced to 1,340 years in prison by the Johannesburg High Court. He was found guilty of 27 murders, 26 counts of attempted murder, 41 of armed robbery, 14 of rape and a number of lesser crimes. The families of the victims said they welcomed the sentencing. One relative said, "If the death sentence was still in place I would be happier than this."
