Centurion psychiatrist Omar Sabadia lost his appeal against his effective 50-year jail term, which he was serving for the 1996 kidnapping and murder of his wife, Zahida Sabadia. A full bench of three High Court judges ruled that there was no reason to interfere with the sentence imposed on Sabadia and said a death sentence - had it existed at the time - would not have been inappropriate. Judge Kees van Dijkhorst said the court would not have erred in giving Sabadia the death sentence for the heinous crime, had it existed.
