Channel Four, a British television, reported that hundreds of Malaysians on dialysis treatment have gone to China and paid the equivalent of 9C7,500 (S$18,900) to receive kidneys from executed criminals. Dr Li Qian Sheng, deputy director of the transplant unit at a hospital in Chongqing, Sichuan province, said that the cost of a kidney was about 9C7,500. Dr John Tan, who helps run a dialysis centre in Malacca, told the programme that most kidneys given to patients from Malaysia in China were from executed prisoners. He said that executions took place inside the hospital in Chongqing and that the prisoners were allowed to die under anaesthetic.
