Chen Kai, an entertainment and property tycoon in southeast China's Fujian province was sentenced to death for running a prostitution and gambling ring involving 50 government officials. Kai, who also had a political career as a member of an advisory body, was sentenced over in Fuzhou, the city where he committed his crimes, the China Daily reported.
He was found to be the head of a 21-member gang that ran thinly disguised casinos and brothels while bribing local government officials to look the other way, according to the newspaper. In what was considered the biggest case of collusion between gangsters and officials ever in Fuzhou, Chen eventually paid a total of one million dollars to 50 different officials to protect his racket, it said. Chen, in his early 40s, was a former small merchant who climbed the social ladder rapidly during the 1990s and was said to be the richest man in Fuzhou by the time of his arrest in 2003. The newspaper did not specify if punishments had been meted out to the officials involved in the case.
