it was reported that “recently”, in its initial trial, the Fujian Nanping City Intermediate People's Court, China, sentenced to death Chen Kai, chairman of Kai Xuan Group Ltd Co, on charges of organizing and leading a criminal syndicate-like organization, intentional injury, contract fraud, bribe offering, tax evasion, gambling and false reporting of registered capital.
Six others involved in the case were sentenced to life imprisonment with deprivation of political rights for life and confiscation of all personal property. The court also sentenced 15 other men to jail terms ranging from one to 17 years. It was alleged that in 1996, Chen set up a group company and “gathered vagrants and ex-prisoners to commit crimes”. The group reportedly “organized prostitution, set up gambling dens, provided places for drug taking, committed injury, caused trouble, evaded taxes and offered 6.13m yuan, 1.09m Hong Kong dollars, and 260,000 US dollars in bribes to dozens of government officials.”
